Google has gone through with the $2.1 billion acquisition of Fitbit. The deal has brought up more concerns regarding Google’s market power and how it might make use of users health data in advertising that is targeted towards them.
In December, the European Union did give its antitrust approval to the two companies once Google had agreed to certain cutbacks on how it makes use of the customers’ data when related to health.
In a blog post, Google said, “This deal has always been about devices, not data, and we’ve been clear since the beginning that we will protect Fitbit users’ privacy.”
Recently, Fitbit lost market share to Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung and Huawei.
